"Hackers can easily break into many accounts just by repeatedly trying common passwords," said SplashData's CEO, Morgan Slain.
If your email password is "password," or "123123," you may want to change it immediately to avoid identity theft, says U.S. based Internet security company SplashData.
"Hackers can easily break into many accounts just by repeatedly trying common passwords," said SplashData's CEO, Morgan Slain. "Even though people are encouraged to select secure, strong passwords, many people continue to choose weak, easy-to-guess ones, placing themselves at risk from fraud and identity theft," he said. "If you have a password that is short or common or a word in the dictionary, it's like leaving your door open for identity thieves."
SplashData gathered the most commonly used passwords from files containing millions of stolen passwords posted online by hackers. The company's report also recommended using unique passwords for each secure site, such as email, Facebook, online banking and entertainment sites.
Another tip, to make complicated passwords easier to remember, is to use words separated by dashes or underscores, a mix of upper and lower case letters, and a liberal use of punctuation, such as "i_LOVE_cats!" or "go-habs_GO."
In a news release, Slain said: "Just a little bit more sophistication in choosing passwords will go a long way toward making you safer online."
The "25 Worst Passwords of the Year" for 2011, according to SplashData, are: password; 123456; 12345678; qwerty; abc123; monkey; 1234567; letmein; trustno1; dragon; baseball; 111111; iloveyou; master; sunshine; ashley; bailey; passw0rd; shadow; 123123; 654321; superman; qazwsx; michael; football. |

| WestJet lands access to LaGuardia | | |
|
WestJet has successfully bid for eight slot pairs at New York' LaGuardia airport. The auction, held by the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), provided select airlines in Canada and the US the unique opportunity to bid on two slot packages for LaGuardia airport and one for Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport. "We are very pleased with our successful bid," said WestJet president Gregg Saretsky. "Our growth plans, in which increased business travel in the East figures prominently, includes New York City, Canada's largest international business market and we look forward to providing our guests with frequent, year-round service to the core of the Big Apple."
He added, "this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. LaGuardia airport is slot controlled and therefore, access is otherwise strictly limited. Our ability to now serve New York demonstrates we are focused on delivering on our business traveller strategy." WestJet will be working over the next several days to finalize the transaction according to FAA requirements while working to secure US customs pre-clearance from Canada. Details on schedule information will be announced at a later date.
